PBC launches first telephony Web portal for the business professional

Johannesburg, 30 Mar 2001

Philips Business Communications (PBC) has developed a unique family of web-enabled applications which operates in a personal portal to a company`s Intranet and the Internet. Called SOPHO MyOffice@Net, these applications will help increase companies` productivity and flexibility because they constitute a telephony environment that makes itself available to users whenever they want it and wherever they are. The user will be able to access several telephone functions via the same user interface he is used to in the environment. This includes PC`s or mobile devices with an Internet browser such as WAP phones.

SOPHO MyOffice@Net offers an employee flexibility and user-friendly control over his personal communications facilities, whether he is behind his desk or on the move. The user interface can be customised in accordance with individual requirements. It can be integrated in a company`s Intranet or made available as a stand-alone solution and offers a wide range of functions. These include phone display and group information, controlling personal phone settings, an online telephone directory, voicemail, Unified Messaging, Mobile Messaging and a softphone.

According to Mike Allsworth, Technologist of PBC, MyOffice@Net will improve the productivity and flexibility of all types of employees that make frequent use of a company`s telephony environment and PC.

"Productivity and efficiency are improved by incorporating MyOffice@Net in a company Intranet. Users will benefit from having company data (the traditional Intranet information) and its complete telephony environment offered at one glance. Integration with existing applications and customer databases offer further advantages of having different business processes linked and optimised in the best possible way," said Allsworth. He added that mobile employees will derive major benefits. "These people travel a lot and find themselves working from different offices, at home, in hotels, and from other remote locations. Having direct access to their own personal telephony environment will give these employees the same communications facilities they enjoy at the office," he said.

Commenting on the wealth of enhancements MyOffice@Net will offer in the areas of productivity and flexibility, PBC`s International Product Manager Heero Smit, said: "It`s not for nothing that we say `SOPHO MyOffice@Net is the personal communications environment that goes where you go`. MyOffice@Net is the perfect response to a growing demand for managing and having access to the complete communications environment. It`s the first personal web portal that will make all telephone facilities available to the business professional from any Internet access point."

SOPHO MyOffice@Net is an integral part of SOPHO @vance, the concept with which PBC provides its customers with converged voice and data solutions.
