BEA Solutions Africa, distributor of the BEA Systems Inc world-leading application infrastructure software company, today announced that BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1 has been awarded a Technical Excellence Award from PC Magazine.
The 20th Annual Technical Excellence Awards, presented by PC Magazine editors, recognises the most innovative and revolutionary products of 2003, with the winners having advanced the state of technology and set new standards for technical innovation.
BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1 is an integrated visual development environment and runtime framework that is designed to enable developers at all levels, not just J2EE experts, to rapidly create, test and deploy service-oriented, enterprise-class applications and Web services on the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform.
The WebLogic Workshop application framework can abstract infrastructure complexities and create applications using standard J2EE components. BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1 is designed to make it easier to build enterprise-class applications for today`s real-life enterprise integration scenarios, and continues to be the top choice for natively supporting key enterprise-requirements such as asynchrony, true loose-coupling, and coarse-grained messaging.
One of the many developer productivity tools of WebLogic WorkShop is Java Page Flows. Many developers are familiar with Struts, an open source framework for building Web applications based on the model-view-controller (MVC) design paradigm. WebLogic Workshop introduces Java Page Flows, which extend the Struts framework to provide a simplified graphical-based development model. As such, BEA`s Java Page Flow leverages the power and extensibility of Struts while also eliminating the difficulties and challenges of building Struts-based applications.

"WebLogic Workshop has brought to the J2EE marketplace a truly unique and powerful RAD (Rapid Application Development) Tool," says Edward Lane, Technical Manager of BEA Solutions Africa. "Many developers have been scared away by the complexities of J2EE. In addition, they may historically be procedural-language-based developers. Project managers have complained about time-to-market of J2EE applications and the cost of the skills required to develop such applications. BEA has changed this. Now developers can build applications as easily and rapidly as they have done before using tools like PowerBuilder, Delphi and Visual Basic, while resting assured that the applications they build are enterprise-class J2EE Applications."
In addition to Java Page Flows, WebLogic WorkShop allows developers to build standard java objects, EJBs, JSPs, Servlets, Web Services, Business Process Flows, Data Transformation Maps, Legacy Application Adapters, B2B Collaborations, Portals, Portlets, Personalisation Rules and more. All resources built in WorkShop have both a Design View and a Source View representation of the resource. Both views are kept in sync, allowing developers to build applications using either a visual or code-based interface.
"And worldwide our customers love it," says Lane. "We are receiving rave reviews from customers, analysts and developer communities alike. Finally there is a tool in the marketplace that truly empowers J2EE developers."
"We are honoured that BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1 has received this award from PC Magazine," said Byron Sebastian, vice-president and general manager, BEA WebLogic Workshop and BEA WebLogic Portal, BEA Systems. "This award, in addition to the various other industry awards WebLogic Workshop has received, recognises our strong commitment to Web application development and to the developer community. By allowing all levels of developers to create and build Web applications, we are truly helping to usher in a new wave of Java adoption."
