PC sales dominate
Market research firm iSuppli reports that despite the hype surrounding gadget technology, PCs continue to dominate the marketplace, according to Mercury News.
The firm says global sales of desktop machines are up 23% from the same quarter last year, blaming last year's weak growth on the recession.
The strongest growth was recorded in notebook PCs, with a 26.5% increase.
SuperTalent intros TeraDrive SSD
Memory manufacturer SuperTalent has released the TeraDrive CT SATA solid-state disc (SSD), reports Tweak Town.
The TeraDrive CT has a standard SATA-II interface, supporting connections up to 3Gpbs. It delivers sequential read and write speeds, with built-in garbage collection and TRIM support to ensure the drive remains sustainable.
The drive uses MLC NAND flash, and offers capacities from 60GB to 480GB.
Nanowires pave way for flexible devices
Scientists at Duke University have discovered the means of creating large quantities of copper nanowires, states PC World.
The researchers say copper is cheaper, efficient and more abundant than indium and can be used to produce nanowires that are less brittle, making them capable of building flexible screens and devices.
"Imagine a foldable iPad," says Benjamin Wiley, assistant professor of chemistry at Duke University. "If we are going to have these ubiquitous electronics and solar cells, we need to use materials that are abundant in the earth's crust and don't take much energy to extract."
