ABSA Bank`s Business Systems Division has confirmed the imminent implementation of the Performance Enhancement Programme (PEP) that will see the bank manage up-and-coming projects based on the results and analysis done by Gauteng-based business performance analysts, QuantiMetrics.
According to Leon du Rand, ABSA`s GM: Technology Solutions, PEP will benchmark and evaluate systems delivery performance within different departments at the bank and, in so doing, highlight areas requiring improvement. "The Performance Enhancement Programme will give us an insight into our systems development performance levels and opportunities for improvement," he says.
"More specifically, the implementation will determine whether the systems development processes implemented within ABSA`s Group Information Technology are still relevant in today`s business environment and will allow the division to review and fine-tune its project estimation techniques. PEP has found that the function points metric is best for measuring project size and Group Information Technology has recently implemented this technique.
"With a strong measurement programme, on-time, in-budget delivery can be the rule rather than the exception, because it will lead to better estimation, change control and improved communication with users." PEP will also highlight the level of systems development productivity within ABSA. Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has recently analysed the PEP measurement of almost 2 000 projects in 95 organisations and found that for projects of comparable size, the most efficient projects were about 100 times as productive as the least efficient," he says.
The first phase of the PEP project is to be implemented in November this year, and will include internal measures to be implemented by ABSA Group Information Technology management to enhance productivity.
