Philips has modified its manufacturing processes to produce electronic equipment, including monitors, without toxins such as lead.
Noting that electronic equipment containing lead poses an environmental hazard, Philips says it now manufactures products that are lead-free in accordance with European legislation, the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS), which comes into effect in July 2006.
Bruce Byrne, visual communications specialist at distributor Drive Control Corporation, says: "Although the RoHS directive only affects the European market, the local market needs to follow their example, adopting the policies adhered to by European manufacturers as guidelines."
Tyrone Young, sales and marketing manager, multimedia displays at Philips SA, says the introduction of lead-free monitors will be "transparent" as it is simply a different process of manufacturing the product.
"Resellers and end-users will still have access to the same range of monitors, the only difference is that they are now lead-free. The same warrantee conditions apply and there will be no difference in pricing."
