Sybase has celebrated a decade of service with fast-moving consumer goods giant Pick 'n Pay. The enterprise infrastructure company provides enhanced data accessibility across 130 corporate stores countrywide, processing more than 2 million product lines a month.
In 1993 Pick 'n Pay bought Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) as a relational database to replace the flat file database on which its home-grown enterprise resource planning (ERP) application had provided restricted access to data.
"The implementation of Sybase ASE significantly enhanced the flexibility and availability of information and opened the door to information previously unavailable," says Rob Simpson, MD of Sybase Cape. "Reliability and speed of access to information has remained our primary focus in delivery of solutions for Pick 'n Pay, keeping the company ahead of competitors in the FMCG arena locally and internationally."
In 2000 Pick 'n Pay, jointly with a Sybase project team, redesigned its complete ERP system, covering all the core operational systems to provide advanced accessibility and information flow. The design of the system is based on object-oriented Java-based application development using Sybase's relational database and replication technology.
A retail management system (RMS) is being rolled out to have the company's more than 200 servers replicating information between Pick 'n Pay's offices to provide access to real-time information to the 2 200 users of the system from anywhere around the country.
A management information reporting system (MIS) based on Sybase IQ data warehousing architecture is also being implemented to provide faster and more cost-effective delivery performance for reporting. Sybase IQ has been successfully implemented at Pick 'n Pay's overseas FMCG subsidiary in Australia.
