Motillion has launched Pinpoint, a mobile app for individuals and . Motillion is a South African start-up aimed at apps - in March it launched Snapdisk, a cloud back-up service.

Pinpoint uses a phone or tablet's GPS sensor to locate the user and stream their location to the Pinpoint servers, where it can be shared with other users of the app. Privacy controls allow the user to specifically allow or forbid others from accessing their location.

Shaun Adler, founder of Motillion, says the service will be aimed at users with safety and security in mind, or at companies needing to track staff movements. “People who are concerned about the safety of their spouse or children can keep track of their movement, or companies who want to manage the movements of a sales force or delivery staff can see all their people in a single interface,” Adler says.

The app is free, but to track other users requires a licence per stream, costing $10 per year.

A standalone device is in development, which will allow assets such as vehicles and bikes, or even children, to be tracked without requiring separate mobile phones or tablets.

Pinpoint is available in the Android store. An iOS version for iPhones and iPads will be available in “about a month”, Adler says.
