Planet adds Windows Server
Dedicated hosting provider The Planet has added Windows Server 2008 to its full line of dedicated server operating systems, says WHIRnews.
The company says it is now offering four editions of the operating system: Windows Web Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 Standard, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 Unauthenticated.
These are available immediately on all its servers, including Windows Server 2008 Web Edition, which customers can access free on single-processor servers.
VIA releases motherboard
VIA Technologies has unveiled the NAS 7800 motherboard designed for thin server and NAS segment system builders, states Digitimes.
The motherboard is powered by a low-heat, energy-efficient 1.5GHz VIA C7 processor, with an optional fanless VIA Eden SKU, the NAS 7800 also features a proprietary MFX module for wake-up scheduling, allowing IT managers to power servers down at night or weekends for savings in electricity usage.
The VIA NAS 7800 uses a 190mm x 143mm form factor, the same size as a standard optical disk drive, with I/O aligned to allow easy integration into drive-sized chassis or even in multiple configurations within a 1U server.
Georgia Tech selects Xsigo
Georgia Tech's College of Computing has successfully deployed Xsigo's I/O virtualisation technology into a research environment at the Center of Experimental Research in Computer Systems (CERCS) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Xsigo's VP 780 I/O Director has been implemented into CERCS latest computing research project on virtual server performance management which will study the impact of virtual machines running on multiple platforms, reports Fox Business.
CERCS is one of the largest experimental systems programmes in the US to focus on complex hardware, communications, and system-level software and applications.
