BitDefender, a global provider of antivirus software, will be launching its new line of security solutions at rAge, South Africa's annual premier computer, gaming and technology expo. BitDefender will showcase the latest features of BitDefender 2008 including an integrated Gamer Mode feature, which is a collection of protection settings intended to provide a safe gaming experience while minimising system load.
To address gamers' needs, BitDefender 2008 introduces the Gamer Mode, a "profile" or a collection of protection settings chosen by experts at the BitDefender Labs in order to keep the product's impact low and the game, safe. The Gamer Mode profile can be used with any game and it can be turned on with just one click.
"Games, especially online games, are some of the most demanding PC applications existing today. Games typically make use of as many system resources as they can access because they must be highly responsive, providing near-instant reaction to users' actions. Therefore, the more resources, the better the gaming experience," says local BitDefender distributor Grayford Holton.
With Gamer Mode, BitDefender 2008 also has anti-phishing capabilities which protect against phishing attacks by filtering all accessed web pages for fraud attempts; and Wi-Fi wireless protection, which alerts users to unauthorised access to their Wi-Fi network.
With games that have an online component, the absence of delays in packet transmission is paramount to enjoying online games to the full. That is why BitDefender's Gamer Mode setting postpones automatic updates, does away with all alerts and pop-ups and sets the scanning level to "permissive" so that only the most important files are scanned. The result, no interruptions while chasing the bad guy or conquering virtual worlds.
Moreover, there is no need for gamers to disable the product's firewall while playing as it is designed to accept certain connections that do not match the existing security rules, but which are instrumental to the gaming experience. Hence, this mode allows achieving three goals that are essential to a smooth gaming experience, minimised system load, zero demands on the network connection and no interruptions.
"BitDefender 2008 provides home and SMB users with an unmatched level of protection that defends against tomorrow's threats today," says Holton. "As hackers and spammers rapidly change their tactics, our patent-pending B-HAVE heuristics technology provides users with the highest levels of proactive protection from zero-day and unknown malware threats. The new capabilities offered in BitDefender 2008, demonstrates BitDefender's ongoing commitment to evolve its offerings to meet the needs of today's latest applications."
