Player envy

No, it`s not a phone, although with phones, which are getting both bigger and smaller, I admit you never can tell. It`s an MP3 and WMA player, it`s got enough capacity for your day`s worth of tunes and it records digital voice.

Like any really exceptional and fairly new device, the Kalliba digital voice recorder (DVR)/music player provokes opposite reactions in people. As concerns this little beauty, you`ll either go green with player envy, or wonder whether people actually think it`s cool to walk around in their own private world with wires hanging off their chests.

The funny thing is, technology doesn`t get me salivating easily, which probably means my wholehearted and high approval rating of this device should tell you something.

Available in Incredible stores within two weeks, the supplier says, this gadget comes in two capacities - 64MB or 128MB. Go for the more expensive one if you can, given the fact that you`ll probably become obsessed with hearing new songs every day, and won`t be able to fit in as many as you need while leaving space to record memos or even interviews with a "smaller" version.

During one test, I was able to record an hour`s worth of continuous voice without any appreciable battery life loss, and then played it back with the same result.

Recording is the real boon in my job. Place the device close enough to the speaker, and you can record whole interviews and manage .wav files as you normally would, with the ability to store and provide playback on Web sites, for example.

There is a utility to check storage space on the device, so if performance gets a bit sluggish, check that and remove an MP3 or two before recording. A fairly easy menu lets you manage all functions, such as previous/next, delete, record, pause and play. A USB cable connects with your PC to transfer and otherwise manage sound files between both devices.
