Games would be accessible for the purported new console, codenamed Orbis, on brand new discs or as downloads from the PlayStation Network (PSN).

While these are only claims from anonymous sources at this point, the idea that console makers are looking to destroy or at least restrict the second-hand gaming and rental market is not surprising.

According to Hot Hardware, new information suggests the PS4 will be built around an AMD x86-64 CPU and GPU, and will require all new games to be registered with a PSN account.

Sony is refusing to comment, but, according to one new report, a successor to the PlayStation 3 is already in the works, and on target for a late 2013 launch, Christian Science Monitor notes.
