PreWorX launches SA-developed personal PC healer

Johannesburg, 30 Jun 2003

There can be few things worse than losing a critical file, except perhaps sitting behind a PC that suddenly decides it does not want to boot anymore. In a corporate environment, the solution is to call IT support and wait for them to sort it out. For home users and small or SOHO businesses, the solution can be more frustrating and much more costly.

Unless you have a personal PC healer, that is. After international success with its Virtual Service Provider automated PC solution for enterprises, Pretoria-based PreWorX has released the PreWorX Personal Healer (PPH), a backup and snapshot application that allows for the fast backing up and restoration of a PC`s operating system, applications, personal settings or data.

Says Rhys Taylor, marketing and sales director of PreWorX: "Personal Healer makes it a simple task for people to restore their PCs to working order from any software-related crashes, or to restore specific files that have been corrupted or overwritten for some reason."

PPH creates scheduled backups of crucial system and/or user-selected data to a local drive or to a shared FTP area across a network. Its simple user interface flattens the learning curve and makes it possible for a user to start using the application from day one. "A full system backup or restore requires only two mouse-clicks," Taylor says.

Additionally, as opposed to traditional backups that require the user to stay away from their machine, PPH allows the user to stay productive by running the backup operation in the system`s idle time. Bandwidth throttling technology is also implemented to ensure maximum processor performance and minimum bandwidth usage when transmitting data on the network.

"Many backup systems consume huge amounts of storage because they copy every file in the backup set every time," notes Taylor. "PPH avoids this by ensuring no duplicate files are saved."

Furthermore, data integrity is assured with industry-standard data compression and encryption technologies. All data is first compressed and then encrypted before being backed up. This ensures that all confidential data remains confidential at all times. Should a PC be struck by a virus, or should any operating system files be deleted or damaged, PPH ensures the machine can be restored to a safe state before the virus infection or system file damage. With minimal user intervention, PPH automatically restores the system to its last known "good" state.

For missing data files, users can start the procedure manually and easily search for and recover files in a matter of minutes.

PPH is a standalone application and does not require any other management solutions or applications to function. All backup and recovery processes occur on the local drive or to a shared FTP area on the network.

As a consumer product, PreWorX is selling PPH through its channel partners and directly to the public at www.shareit.com, where it retails for $30.
