Print savings the focus of new HP Printer Academy

Johannesburg, 23 Mar 1999

South African companies could afford to buy a new mid range laser printer every year from savings realised from using HP printers and toner cartridges compared with what it would cost to run competitive products.

According to Wim Heuninck, HP marketing manager, printers and peripherals, the cost per page of an HP LaserJet 4000 using an HP toner cartridge, based on recent research undertaken by Torrey Pines Research in the US, was 9.68 cents compared to costs as high as 18.39 cents for competitive printers using cartridges produced by their respective manufacturers.

"That`s a saving of more than R8 500 a year taking into account that the typical workload of a network printer is 100 000 copies a year," says Heuninck.

"When you think that many companies run several dozen printers on their networks, you`re looking at savings of many hundreds of thousands of Rands over the life time of those printers," he adds.

Such means of achieving lower costs per page and details of how companies can better manage their print costs, boost employee productivity and increase competitiveness are to be the focus of an HP Printer Academy to be run by HP South Africa on a quarterly basis.

The first HP Printer Academy, will be held at Hewlett-Packard`s Sandton headquarters on March 30 for end users and March 31 for HP resellers. Among the issues to be discussed by an IT specialist at this inaugural event will be the development of a strategy to better manage print costs, ways of saving up to 50% on ink expenditure, duplex printing and reducing power consumption.

"We`ll also be looking at way to increase productivity," says Heuninck. "It`s staggering to think that every year, each and every employee in an organisation spends an average of nearly 90 hours walking hard copy pages around the office. There is a better way and we`ll show our Academy delegates how."
