Printers make way for MFDs

Johannesburg, 19 Oct 1998

Why should today`s discerning PC user buy a separate printer, scanner, fax and personal photocopier when it is all available in a single unit - and for a far more appealing price?

This is the question posed by Xerox Channel Group GM, Billy Bell, who believes technology behind today`s multifunctional devices (MFDs) has matured to the point that these devices now provide compelling alternatives. "The greatest concerns today surround the field of ergonomics and desktop real estate which makes an MFD a logical choice to replace yesterday`s separate devices," he says.

Bell says the all-in-one concept is fast gaining acceptance and its benefits are fast becoming clear to the end user. "In terms of simplicity of use, space saving and, last but not least, cost saving an MFD product can significantly boost productivity."

Substantiating his claim Bell says MFDs are able to perform multiple functions simultaneously reducing the time users need wait for a job to finish. "This streamlines works processes and enhances productivity gains already provided by the PC and its software."

However, Bell warns users considering an MFD to apply the same rules they would to choosing a printer. "As every experienced PC users knows, the true cost of a peripheral device is not found in the initial purchase price but in the cost of the consumables required to keep it operational," he says.

"It is advisable to investigate true cost of ownership of any new device - particularly when it comes to ink refills for the printer.

"At the end of the day people are always on the lookout for a bargain. Five devices - colour printer, fax machine, personal copier, scanner and PC fax [software] - for the price of one is certainly that," concludes Bell.
