Prism`s e-bill payment service, Easyway, goes live in Malaysia

First service of its kind to be launched outside SA using Prism-developed technology
Johannesburg, 02 Oct 2001

A secure electronic bill payment service - Easyway - has been launched in Malaysia by Prism Holdings` and Telekom Malaysia`s joint venture company Telekom Technology Sdn Bhd (TTSB).

The Easyway service is based on technology developed by Prism for its South African EasyPay system, which is now in demand globally.

Wim Grobler, Prism Holdings` Regional Managing Director: Asia-Pacific, says this is the first service of its kind to be launched outside SA using Prism-developed technology, and validates Prism`s strategy of using its intellectual property to drive the company`s global expansion

"Over 320 kiosks have been shipped to Malaysia with many already installed in more than 30 locations in the Klang Valley province," says Grobler, who adds that inroads have also been made into European market. In addition to the back-end technology, which includes a transaction switch, Prism also designed and built the transaction kiosks.

The Easyway Transaction Kiosk (ETK) was launched to the public this month at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, attended by Telekom Malaysia`s CEO, Datuk Dr Md Khir Abdul Rahman.

Speaking at the launch, Zakaria Husin, CEO at TTSB, described the Easyway Transaction Kiosk as "a cashless electronic bill payment and prepaid uploading system which allows the public to settle their bills 24-hours-a-day without having to go to manned service counters".

The service allows consumers to pay their Telekom fixed-line, TMTouch and TMnet bills at any online kiosk. Future plans are to connect other utility companies and municipalities to the system.

The cashless kiosks accept Visa and Master credit cards as well as ATM cards from one of Malaysia`s major banks. Users are also issued with a proof of payment receipt from the kiosk.

Husin says the `vandal-resistant` Eazyway kiosks provide the highest security.

"Transaction messages are encrypted from the point that they were initiated to the participating bank for authorisation, right up to the updating of the bill owners records by the bill issuers."

Husin believes that 30% of all bill payments will be made via the kiosks within five years due to the convenience it offers consumers.
