Police commissioner general Riah Phiyega has ordered a probe into a R100 million two-year cellphone deal, which could freeze the contract, reports the Sunday Times.

The paper reports this morning that the commissioner's stepson features in a due diligence report conducted by South Africa's largest cellphone company, Vodacom.

According to the report, Metse Phiyega has links with Patrick Makhubedu, who approached Vodacom to in the deal.

Phiyega, via her spokesman, told the paper that the investigation was launched after a bidder approached her with concerns over some police supply-chain management officials.

The Sunday Times quotes Vodacom spokesman Richard Boorman as saying all potential are subject to due diligence and the decision was taken not to go ahead with the partnership.

"At no point was anything improper proposed to Vodacom," Boorman is quoted as saying.

The paper says nine companies, including MTN, Cell C and Altech Autopage, are bidding for the deal, which Vodacom has held for more than a decade.
