Psion Teklogix highlights the increasing importance of quality end products, particularly those products that are temperature sensitive and provides a range of mobile computing products with RFID technology for the accurate monitoring of the cold chain, from loading dock to point of delivery.
According to Psion Teklogix Country Manager, Raymond Hoy, RFID has been around for a number of years but it is now proving its worth in terms of mobility, accuracy and return on investment.
Some advantages of mobile temperature monitoring with RFID include:
* Constant provision of valuable, reliable and accurate information.
* Automatic updating for optimum visibility within the cold chain.
* Fully portable, wireless, compact and user-friendly.
* Increased product quality.
* Large memory storage - 13 000 temperature reads per tag.
* Reading intervals can be programmed.
* Versatile - RFID tag can also be used for other applications.
"Our efficient mobile temperature monitoring solution consists of a rugged, handheld device, the Workabout Pro, as well as an active tag, developed by Identec Solution, a company with 20 years experience in the industry," says Hoy.
Hoy continues: "Experience has shown us that one handheld device can never meet the demands of all applications. We drew on this experience to develop our Workabout Pro, as an open and flexible system that can be adapted to various applications, both inside and outside the warehouse so, drivers can confidently use our handheld device, come rain, wind or shine."
The feature-rich Workabout Pro offers:
* Industry standard CE.NET and Intel XScale architecture
* VGA daylight mono, colour and touch screen
* Backlit, well laid out keyboard
* Connectivity includes Bluetooth (printers)
* Versatility and flexibility - can be used as a bar code scanner, fingerprint scanner, GPS, image capturing
The active tag, which contains a battery with a remarkable six myear life-span, features:
* 100m read-write range
* No line of sight
* 32KB memory
* Track and trace capability
* A temperature sensor
* IP65 rating
* UHF operating frequencies
* Supports Linux, CE and Win 2000
"Our mobile `auditor` has a sixth sense of identification and works tirelessly 24/7 to accurately monitor the entire cold chain and will alert customers to temperature fluctuations that may have taken place during transportation," explains Hoy. "Even the slightest temperature variation could cause spoilage of temperature sensitive products which is not only a high cost factor to the supplier but could also affect customer relationships and impact negatively on future orders", says Hoy.
Once the product is loaded, the driver uses the Workabout Pro to scan the temperature log and, for the duration of the journey the Workabout Pro screen supplies the driver with the temperature reading, alerting him to temperature fluctuations.
On arrival at the destination, the customer can either read the information on the screen or a graph can be produced.
Psion Teklogix`s mobile handheld computing device will accurately audit the temperature and will provide a complete order trail of the cold chain accurate monitoring of product quality from collection to delivery.
