Universal Communication Services (Sub-Sahara Africa) Executive Chairman, Benjamin Mouton, recently announced the appointment of Professor Peter E Kinyanjui as executive director to the board of UCOMS.
UCOMS is a tenant at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria and specialises in centrally managed systems for the delivery of computing power and computing and communications services. The company also provides these services to the Oprah Winfrey School in Natal and the NEPAD e-schools in Rwanda, Mauritius and other African countries.
Professor Kinyanjui is currently active in the private sector where he is involved in initiatives that are furthering advanced education and knowledge transfer, specifically also in the ICT sector, to disadvantaged communities in the rural areas of Africa.
Prior to his current activities, he was the programme commissioner and coordinator of the NEPAD e-Schools Initiative, which is based at the CSIR in Pretoria.
His field of expertise in distance learning processes has been of great benefit in the NEPAD programme, which aims to provide education to 600 000 schools throughout Africa. Several schools in South Africa and the rest of Africa have already benefited from the implementation of this programme.
His decision to join UCOMS was motivated by the fact that the company has, over the past two years, been involved in Africa with ICT industry leader Cisco and distance learning specialist PLATO in transferring ICT-related knowledge to rural communities.
It is his intention to assist UCOMS in significantly expanding its knowledge transfer processes and rolling out its Commercial Community Centres Programme.
