Progress OpenEdge leverages Web for building business applications

Johannesburg, 06 Aug 2001

Progress Software SA has announced the local availability of OpenEdge, an e-business application platform that includes all the tools required for developing and managing e-business applications, and enables users to take advantage of the Internet for application deployment and integration.

Organisations are finding they need the ability to integrate easily over the Internet with other systems and platforms. "With OpenEdge, Progress has assembled the key pieces of a comprehensive platform for building e-business applications," says Rick Parry, MD of Progress Software SA.

"The Progress database, coupled with a standards-based messaging infrastructure and a new development framework, provides application developers with a technology foundation for developing Web-enabled and ASP-enabled applications."

OpenEdge integrates new tools such as those from the Internet Component Framework (ICF) initiative for rapid development, Internet-enabled integration and effective management with Progress technology, which is embedded in more than 5 000 business applications.

Progress products, such as the relational database management system (RDBMS), WebSpeed, WebClient and AppServer, are now offered with a message-oriented backbone, SonicMQ, which allows for fast, flexible and scalable message-based integration over the Internet or within an organisation. OpenEdge allows for emerging business applications to be integrated easily using SonicMQ, XML, and the Progress fourth generation language.

"OpenEdge reflects Progress`s commitment to providing technology for building `futureproof` applications," says Parry. "It enables our clients to build brand-new e-business applications, move existing back-office applications to the Web, or integrate their suppliers, trading partners and customers."
