ProScan rolls out first of RFID products

By ProScan Systems
Johannesburg, 12 Oct 2004

ProScan Systems, distributor of barcoding, data collection, RFID, wireless networking and mobile technologies introduces the Intermec IP3 Intellitag reader, which in tandem with the Intermec 700 Colour mobile computer delivers a truly mobile radio frequency identification (RFID) solution to the supply chain.

The IP3 portable reader is a snap-on, high impact plastic and magnesium trigger handle accessory that adds the capability to read and write to Intellitag RFID tags to all Intermec 700 Series Colour mobile computers. With the IP3 option, the Intermec 700 mobile computer is capable of reading and writing to RFID tags while also being able to scan barcodes with its integrated barcode scanner.

The IP3 features an integrated circular polarised antenna that reads tags in any orientation for the UHF frequency band while not interfering with industry-standard Bluetooth, LAN or WAN transmissions occurring in the mobile data collection environment.

The IP3 can read 105mm tags from a distance of 1.5 metres using a single antenna at a rate of up to six tags per second, and retain up to 100 tag IDs in its memory before passing the tag information onto the Intermec 700 Series mobile computer.

The power of Intermec`s Intellitag RFID technology is in the ability to update data on a tagged item, case or pallet in real time, and many times over, to share with other partners in the internal or external supply chain. The IP3 can perform a verified write at an average rate of 31ms per byte, per tag.

The IP3 allows a worker to take the 700 mobile computer to the item in the workplace, whether it`s on the shop floor, the store floor or the receiving dock, rather than moving tagged objects past a fixed reader. This results in a more efficient system that saves time and effort and increases productivity.

Andrew Fosbrook, Managing Director of ProScan Systems, comments: "The IP3 and 700 Colour Series pave the way for the future in the supply chain by combining barcoding and RFID tags through the use of barcode labels with embedded RFID tags in order to cover both systems and allow users to upgrade in the future.

The IP3 reader is suitable for RFID solutions requiring an extended read range, multi-tag sort, read/write, and memory capacity not provided by "proximity" technology.

"Users of the 700 Series Colour mobile computers have reported productivity gains and enjoyed application flexibility enabled by the three radios, namely Bluetooth, local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN), as well as the area and linear imagers integrated into the handheld device. Combining these capabilities with the IP3, and the strength of the Microsoft Pocket PC platform, gives users unparalleled flexibility in scanning, data transmission and application computing.

"While RFID solutions are ideal for eliminating human intervention and line of sight restrictions in data collection applications, there is always a need for exception-based scanning," concludes Fosbrook.
