The memory card sector is experiencing growth of between 25% and 50% year-on-year locally, says Gary Shap, MD of Tudor Photographic, local distributor of SanDisk memory cards.
Further growth is expected to be spurred by the release of 60 000 PSP gaming consoles, he says.
The Sony PSP uses external flash memory cards to upgrade memory, for saving game levels and generally improving the capacity of the PSP, says Shap.
"With enough memory, the PSP can be transformed into a mobile entertainment unit that can play music videos and keep MP3 tracks, photos or other data," he says.
Further growth
Additional contributors to growth in the memory card market are surges in the digital SLR camera and smart cellphone market, says Shap.
Shap predicts that at least 50% of all cellphones will have memory card slots by 2006.
Cellphones are continually being developed into music centres, boosted with the recent release of the iTunes-based ROKR phone, and camera phone image quality is getting better, both of which require more memory, says Shap.
SanDisk is also considering selling stored content - such as popular music - on memory disks, says Shap.
