PTK Centertel selects Unisys, Phone.com Solution for WAP communications services in Poland

By Unisys
Johannesburg, 16 Jun 2000

Unisys Corporation today announced that it has delivered a turnkey Application Protocol (WAP) solution based on Unisys e-@ction Value Added Services Solutions to leading Polish mobile communications operator PTK Centertel. PTK Centertel is the first customer to benefit from the recent Unisys agreement with Phone.com, and will utilize Phone.com`s UP.Link Server Suite, which gives operators the ability to support the broadest selection of wireless Internet applications available.

Centertel has gone live with delivery of new wireless Internet service offerings to its mobile customers, after the successful and speedy implementation of the WAP-based infrastructure, WAP platform and applications and associated professional services from Unisys. For the first time, PTK Centertel mobile subscribers will have the potential to access Internet and corporate Intranet-based services including e-mail, news, stocks, weather, travel and sports via their wireless devices. The Centertel solution is further evidence that WAP-based services are moving into all markets, and not just confined to specific regions.

"PTK Centertel will be one of the first Polish mobile operators to offer WAP services, which means our one million current subscribers can take advantage of the latest and most advanced technology available via their mobile phones," said Zbigniew Saniewski, Marketing Director of PTK Centertel. "Our alliance with Unisys and Phone.com enables us to tap their global resources to capitalize on the emerging market of mobile information services and wireless e-commerce."

A global leader in providing carrier-based solutions to solve business problems, Unisys partnered with Phone.com to combine Unisys e-@ction Value-Added Services portfolio with the Phone.com UP.Link Server Suite. UP.Link enables the delivery of Wireless Markup Language (WML) content - the standard for WAP connectivity - to any WAP-enabled handset. Phone.com`s UP.Link Server Software enables network operators to provide their subscribers with email services as well as Internet and intranet information services and applications.

"Unisys is committed to providing information technology solutions to allow our clients to better serve their customers," Darrell Jennings, head of Unisys Global Communications Industry. "The collaboration between Unisys and Phone.com puts PTK Centertel in a leadership position in delivering wireless services to meet its customers` most pressing information access and e-business needs."
