Nationwide voter registration will soon be underway in Uganda with the help of a Durban-based company.
PQ Africa Group company Q Forms Processing (QPF) has won a contract to print unique serial numbers on 10 million voter registration forms in preparation for elections which are expected to take place in Uganda towards mid-2001.
Printing began on 21 December when the first forms were received from Universal Business Forms and the first three million were printed, processed, and delivered to the client by December 31 with the balance being due for completion by January 20.
The size of the job is immense. QFP general manager Steve Horne explained that the job includes printing the serial numbers on the forms, cutting them to size, checking that none are missing, packing them into bundles of 500 and then into boxes of 3000, and palletising and shrink-wrapping them.
Horne says he has calculated that 3300 boxes a little larger than the standard typing paper box will be required to pack the forms, that the combined weight of the forms, alone, is about 58,5 tons and that, if laid end to end, they would stretch for 2970 kilometers.
To complete the contract Q Forms has hired a Model 2090 continuous-feed laser printer from Oc`e Printing Systems which, together with their existing Model 2140, gives the company the capacity to print the voter registration forms at over 22000 pages an hour.
With voter registration in Uganda set to begin early in the new year the project is extremely time-sensitive and PQ Africa KZN EXCO member Dave Lowe says that he is proud that Q Forms was awarded the tender for the job in the face of nationwide competition.
He believes that the contract has taken the already successful company into the front rank of printing and mailing operations in the country and opened the way for it to become a major player in the local and international markets.
