Q-KON, Hawkstone use satellite to empower learners, entrepreneurs

Johannesburg, 23 Mar 2011

Hawkstone iSolutions, part of the Hawkstone Holdings Group and local distributor of the iLab and iCaf'e service facilities, has partnered with Q-KON in order to acquire bandwidth and benefits of the que-X platform.

Q-KON is a South Africa-based engineering group focused on providing turnkey solutions and managed network services to the emerging African telecommunications market.

The company is also the recognised local supplier of que-X, a point-to-multipoint satellite access service that provides a dedicated two-way communication circuit from an on-premise earth station at the customer site to the Teleport facility in Midrand, South Africa.

From the teleport, the access circuit is connected to the customer's hosted equipment in the Tier-4 Data Centre, or backhauled to the customer's South African premises via terrestrial links.

“This is a South African satellite teleport service and solution that is provided in conjunction with Business Connexion. All services terminate at the Business Connexion Data Centre and Teleport, in Midrand,” explains Dawie de Wet, CEO of Q-KON.

The que-X network supports a range of quality-of-service profiles for specific user applications. These include dedicated Internet; committed information rate circuits for corporate applications; bulk carrier segments for private networks; as well as the offer of private line services from any remote location in Africa to global office locations.

Hawkstone iSolutions has a reseller agreement in place with Q-KON. The company leverages off que-X's Ku Band, one of two alternate satellite channels that form part of the solution, to roll out its iLab and iCaf'e service facilities to an expanding client base.

The Hawkstone iLab is a distance learning service and is a turnkey education and ICT computer laboratory solution. It provides educators and learners in developing communities with access to ICT infrastructure and, if bundled with VSAT, with Internet connectivity.

The Hawkstone iCaf'e is a service facility that features a range of digital infrastructure and services that is designed to empower communities and local entrepreneurs.

“We are proud of our association with Hawkstone and are encouraged by the role played by our platform in helping to facilitate distance education and address the need for key skills in the country,” says De Wet.

The partnership is ongoing and representatives from both companies believe there are more projects in the pipeline that will involve que-X.

“Hawkstone's iLab and iCaf'e facilities are specifically aimed at addressing the need for ICT services in rural under-serviced communities, even though they are equally at home in rural developed areas. Partnering with Q-KON has enabled Hawkstone to reach even more remote communities where GSM & ADSL connectivity is not available or restricted, thereby closing the gap between the advanced and under-privileged,” said Jacques Fullard, Marketing Manager, Hawkstone iSolutions.
