Quad-core chip arrives in 2010
AMD is set to launch Champlain, its first quad-core microprocessor designed for notebooks, in 2010, reports Softpedia.
Although this would be a step forward for AMD, the chip will still be about one year behind the first similar CPU that will arrive from Intel.
The upcoming chip is to go hand in hand with a new AMD platform code-named Danube.
Gloomy market hits PC sales
While the economic slowdown hasn't affected PC hardware vendors in the third quarter, the plunging rupee, low consumer sentiments and cautious enterprises are a growing concern for forthcoming quarters, says The Economic Times.
According to Gartner, Q3 saw both the desktop and notebook space growing by 3.3% and 21.3% quarter-on-quarter, respectively.
While the year-on-year growth grew marginally by 3.8% for desktops, it has doubled to 53% for notebooks in the same period. The sales for this quarter were high due to the festive season and the rupee had not depreciated much.
PC growth forecasts cut
Data tracking firm iSuppli cut its growth forecast for the personal computer industry by nearly two-thirds, as rapidly deteriorating conditions in the global market weaken demand and many major economies fall into recession, Reuters reports.
iSuppli now expects global PC shipments to grow by only 4.3% in 2009, versus a previous forecast of 11.9%, the company said in a release.
It also pared back its growth forecast for 2010 to 7.1% from a previous 9.4%.
