South African gamers will now have faster speeds when playing online games, since Solutions (IS) is hosting the popular Quake Live gaming server locally.

According to IS, the server went live last week and is already drawing great crowds from the local gaming community.

Davin Hansen, gaming services manager at IS, says the company is proud to host the only game server of its kind in SA.

He adds that hosting the server locally means IS can offer local gamers lower latency and higher connectivity speeds. “We also give them the opportunity to use their local bundles to participate in the live gaming experience, reducing the costs involved in playing online,” Hansen explains.

Hansen says Quake Live runs an updated version of the id Tech 3 engine, focusing on game play rather than major graphical upgrades and includes a more streamlined heads-up display.

“The game automatically downloads game content in the background as a part of the registration process while the player interacts through a browser plug-in that can be embedded into the Web site,” he adds.

According to Hansen, Quake Live currently supports Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari, and will work on Windows XP, Vista, and 7, as well as on Mac OS X and most Linux distributions. Google Chrome, however, is not yet supported, he adds.
