"How do I love thee? Yebo! Let me push the digits..."

First there was text-based flirting via SMS, now your cellphone can say how much you care (and take it back) via Vodacom`s new VoiceCard .

Simply by dialling 082 230 1000 from any mobile or fixed telephone, voice greeting cards can be sent to any of Vodacom`s 4.3 million contract and prepaid cellphone users.

According to Joan Joffe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom, the service allows VoiceCard senders to select an appropriate message jingle for several special occasions and record a personal message to be played to a Vodacom user on a certain date and time.

What`s more, if he gave in and apologised first, you can recall your "I`m sorry" message minutes after you sent it with Tracy Chapman`s "Sorry, is all that I can say" jingle. A special reference number allows you to delete or check the status of the message.

"Internationally, the market for voice greeting cards is worth more than US$7 billion a year. Locally, Vodacom is the first South African cellular to launch this technology and believes it has significant revenue-generating potential," said Ms Joffe.

Voice greeting cards overcome the disadvantages of printed cards, particularly during the festive season when senders would like to ensure that their greetings are received before Christmas and New Year. Vodacom`s VoiceCard service promises delivery within 30 minutes.

"E-Greeting cards sent via e-mail are popular amongst South Africans, however many recipients find it irritating to have to visit a website to retrieve the virtual card. VoiceCards eliminate the hassle factor because the cards are sent straight to the recipients` cellphone number," concluded Ms Joffe.

Calls to the VoiceCard 082 230 1000 number are charged at normal cellular rates. Users simply dial the number and follow the voice prompts.
