Read - and listen to - e-mail on your cellphone

Johannesburg, 07 Jun 2000

Want to read - or listen to - your e-mail while on the move? Now, thanks to a new service from World Online, you can do both.

According to World Online MD Graeme Victor, the new services mean World Online subscribers don`t have to sit in front of their PCs to receive e-mails.

"Internet users can read their e-mail messages which have been delivered to their e-mail box on their WAP cellphone screen. There`s also an option to reply either electronically from the cellphone or from a PC," Victor says and adds that Vodacom subscribers will also receive free SMS notification of any new e-mails.

In addition, World Online has joined forces with Vocalis, an international speech technology group, to deliver a new SpeechMail service to its 100 000-plus subscriber base.

"SpeechMail allows Internet subscribers to access their mailboxes and listen to their messages which are converted to voice through a combination of Advanced Speech Recognition and text-to-speech technologies," he explains.

"These e-mail services complement the other Mobile Internet services launched recently by World Online. These include SA`s first customisable Mobile Internet portal, access to a host of Mobile Internet websites and services, and a helpline which allows callers to have their WAP-enabled cellphones configured remotely for Mobile Internet usage."

Other innovative services, which will give Internet subscribers even more freedom of movement, are scheduled to be announced later this month.
