Record revenue for Intel

Johannesburg, 19 Oct 2005

Intel achieved record revenue of $9.96 billion for the third quarter of its fiscal year, up 18% year-over-year and up 8% sequentially.

Operating income of $3.1 billion was up 31% year-on-year and up 17% sequentially, and includes the impact of a legal settlement.

The group entered into the settlement agreement with MicroUnity earlier this month, resolving a patent infringement case and providing certain rights for Intel customers.

In terms of the agreement, Intel will pay $300 million to MicroUnity. Intel says it recorded a preliminary $140 million charge to third-quarter cost of sales, which reduced earnings per share by about 2c.

The remaining $160 million represents the value of intellectual property expected to be amortised over about 10 years.

Net income was $2 billion, 5% up year-on-year and down 2% sequentially. Earnings per share (EPS) were 32c, up 7% from 30c in the third quarter of 2004 and down 3% from 33c in the second quarter of 2005.

The group says the third-quarter net income and EPS both included the impact of the legal settlement.
