Rectron has announced the immediate availability of the Fujitsu AL5E/5LE family of Fibre Channel enterprise hard drives.
The drive is the latest in high-performance enterprise storage from Fujitsu and provides 36,4Gb in a 1,6 inch high device. Giant Magneto-resistive Heads (GMR) combined with the latest Enhanced Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (EPRML) digital read channel enable twice the capacity on the same media as previous generation 18,2Gb drives.
According to Dean Prinsloo product manager at Rectron, the interface is an Ultra2 SCSI Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop which delivers an 100 Mb per second to the host machine, with a maximum copper segment length of 30m and an ability to service 126 devices from the same loop.
"Internal data transfer rates are 45Mb per second with seek times of 5,5ms. The drives also sport a 2Mb multi-segmented buffer to enhance performance, making them ideal for demanding enterprise applications such as storage area network (SANs) and high availability systems," says Prinsloo.
The ALE/5LE family uses embedded servos to eliminate the need for re-calibration, improving the performance of data transfer for time critical applications such as video encoding/decoding and music playback.
The drives also have a mean time between failure (MTBF) in excess of one million power on hours.
