The new Tecra S3, said to be the first notebook computer to feature Toshiba`s new anti-theft "protection timer" device, has been launched in South Africa by Rectron, the local distributor of Toshiba notebook and laptop computer products.
The Tecra S3`s protection timer allows users to set up a timer-activated BIOS password that will prevent system access in the event of theft or unauthorised access.
This feature is said to make the act of stealing a Tecra S3 pointless, as after a user-defined time, the password will activate itself, locking the system access to non-authorised users.
This new security feature can also be used together with the unit`s fingerprint reader to ensure higher levels of restricted access to the system and its data.
The Tecra S3, which is fully compliant with the new European Union directives on the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, is positioned as a high-end scalable corporate platform model offering powerful PC functionality.
It also features Toshiba`s next-generation EasyGuard technology, which according to Andre Rossouw, a technology specialist and Toshiba brand manager at Rectron, allows for enhanced data security, advanced system protection and easy connectivity.
Additional features of the Tecra S3 include a spill-resistant keyboard and a shock protection system that reduces the risk of data loss in the event of accidental shock, vibration or a drop.
"In addition, a new utility facilitates the backup and restore of system files and user data at the same time. This, combined with Toshiba`s RAID 1 support, minimises downtime by protecting against data loss and ensuring quick data recovery," says Rossouw.
"For security and ease of use, the unit`s fingerprint reader offers an alternative sign-in security and the newly integrated single touch boot utility allows for automatic sign-in even in a multi-user environment," he explains.
"The user can sign-in to the BIOS, Windows and hard disk with a single swipe, replacing multiple passwords."
According to Rectron, the Tecra S3 was developed to facilitate a seamless workflow experience and ensure consistent and uncompromised system expansion through backwards compatibility.
It also ensures that integration into the office environment is simple via its Advanced Port Replicator III (APR III) docking solution.
An optional high capacity battery extends working time to up to six hours.
The Tecra S3 retails at a suggested price of R15 999 (ex VAT).
