Transcend, international manufacturer of memory cards, portable HDDs, multimedia products, graphics cards and accessories, has recently discovered fake Transcend memory modules being sold in Taipei. These fake modules look nearly identical to the originals, but don't work when installed in PCs.
Rectron is the sole distributor of Transcend products in South Africa and as such, is warning consumers not to purchase a Transcend product that is not being distributed via Rectron, which is the official channel.
"It is very possible that these fake modules will start infiltrating the South African market," says Cheslynne Britz, Business Manager at Rectron, "which is something that resellers need to be aware of. However, provided resellers buy stock directly from Rectron, there shouldn't be a problem."
The packaging of these counterfeit Transcend products looks identical to the original; however, the PCBs are different. Look out for the following flaws on counterfeit Transcend modules:
* If you suspect your module might be a fake, refer to the bar code sticker on the PCB and visit the product verification Web site: http://www.transcend.com.tw/Support/SerialCheck.asp?Func2No=160. Enter the S/N number along with the ID code (the two letters following the S/N code) into the appropriate fields to verify the module.
* All transcend products contain the Transcend logo and CE certification on the PCB, as well as the manufacture location and DRAM chips on the back of the PCB.
Says Werner Joubert, Product Manager at Rectron: "Transcend's flash media undergo several quality tests to ensure that a life-time warranty can be issued, and should a malfunction occur, Rectron will replace the unit with a current model and size. The Transcend brand is ranked under Taiwan's top 20 most valuable brands and has been accepted in the South African channel as a premium brand of the highest quality. The value of the quality of Transcend cannot be counterfeited."
