Reducing waste key to minimising printing costs

Against a backdrop of growing environmental awareness and challenging economic conditions, a major document solutions company offers organisations a welcome combination of economic and environmental savings.

Johannesburg, 15 Dec 2009

The shift at the Copenhagen Climate Summit away from massive, direct interventions to a practical approach based on making 'small changes to every aspect of our lives to achieve a big difference' has been welcomed by Kyocera Mita South Africa, a document solutions company committed to environmental preservation and ensuring every page that gets printed counts.

With the entire range of Kyocera Mita Ecosys printers, Product Marketing Manager, Michael Powell, explains that this is an approach the company has also championed since 1992. “Printing is an integral part of most of our daily lives, which makes it a widespread activity we should try to be more conscious about,” he observes. “That's why our goal is to ensure that every page gets printed in the most environmentally sustainable manner possible.”

It's an ambition that is central to Kyocera Mita's Ecosys approach. The range is based on a patented amorphous silicon print drum, which, together with several other long-life components, requires only one consumable - the toner itself. “Conventional printers use an imaging cartridge that contains the drum, developer and toner in a single unit,” explains Powell. “This unit has to be disposed of in its entirety when the toner is depleted - at significant cost to the environment and the user.”

Kyocera Mita's toner also contributes. Not only is it designed for maximum efficiency and to only need replacing every 7 200 to 40 000 pages from smaller to larger cartridges, tiny ceramic particles embedded in it continually polish and recondition the amorphous silicon drum during normal printing, enabling it to last up to five times longer than competitive products.

“The result is that Kyocera Mita's Ecosys printers create less waste than any other competitive product and offer the lowest comparable cost per print,” maintains Powell, “and it's an approach that isn't limited to our products either, we are equally committed to protecting the environment at Kyocera Mita factories and have a proud history of environmentally friendly product development.”

A combination of long-life, durable components and energy efficient processes, Kyocera Mita's Ecosys printers don't just reduce waste and pollution, the machines also cost less to operate. The total cost of ownership (TCO) of the range - including everything from purchase to operation, administration and maintenance - is class leading. “This is an important consideration, particularly in these challenging economic times,” notes Powell. “Ecosys printers also offer Kyocera Mita's established benefits of ultra-reliability and durability, which reduce downtime, workflow disruptions and maintenance costs.

“We would like to think that this all adds up to a welcome message that makes clear economic and environmental sense,” concludes Powell. “That switching to advanced, reliable and eco-friendly products will not only reduce waste and printing costs, but also help us make a bigger difference by ensuring every page that gets printed counts.”
