Removable media: Unauthorised usage is a great security risk - Condyn

Johannesburg, 03 Nov 2004

In today`s business environment it is important to minimise any security risk, not only external from the Net but also internally. It is standard practice for PCs to come out with a 1.44 floppy disk drive, USB port and/or CD writer. In other words, there are many external devices on which you can download critical data which can go astray without the knowledge of the company.

"We saw this as a real threat in any organisation and looked for a product that can protect these devices with a central management tool," says Jorina van Rensburg, CEO of Condyn.

"We are extremely excited to announce that we have found this well developed at Securewave, SA and Securewave, SA has appointed Condyn as their distributor of this product range."

"SecureWave is pleased to be able to launch its entry into the South African market with Condyn. We selected them because of their outstanding reputation with customers, partners and vendors, and trust they will introduce our end-point security whitelist approach into this market," says Bertrand Manhe, SecureWave Partner Program Manager.

SecureWave introduced Sanctuary Device Control with Device Shadowing, which records and audits all data written to an authorised portable device, while blocking all unauthorised devices and media from corporate PCs and laptops.

Sanctuary Device Control is a centralised management tool through which the administrator can manage a whitelist of devices that are permitted on the network, while excluding all unknown or unauthorised devices.

Devices are managed according to their types (scanner, zip drive, PDA, modem, etc) rather than by their methods of connection (USB, LPT, FireWire, WiFi, etc), SecureWave said. Temporary access can be granted to a given device type: for example, certain kinds of devices might be usable on the network only during work hours and not at night.

Sanctuary also audits I/O device use as well as attempts to use unauthorised devices. The Device Shadowing feature provides a complete record and copy of data transferred to authorised devices from corporate endpoints, databases and servers. In this way, organisations not only can control which devices have access, but also learn what information is stored on them.

SecureWave also makes Sanctuary Application Control, which allows administrators to control the execution of applications, including non-corporate and illegal applications as well as spyware and malware using the same whitelist principle.
