Telkom has spent around R4 million to upgrade gym at its Pretoria head office, despite the company undergoing retrenchments and cost-cutting, the Sunday Times reports.
According to the paper, around R1 million was spent on five treadmills, six indoor bicycles and numerous kettlebells and dumbbells.
Other upgrades and equipment purchases brought the price up to around R4 million.
The telco is in the midst of a restructuring process that includes retrenchments as well as curbing spending.
The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) announced on Friday that Telkom has issued retrenchment letters to 105 staff members. The CWU demanded that Telkom retract the letters.
'Cost- consciousness'
In September last year, Telkom told its staff that the best way to reduce costs was to cultivate a company-wide culture of cost-consciousness.
The telco had already cut its subscriptions to newspapers and also stopped buying bottled water from the budget.
Other cost-cutting measures included the telco stopping its contributions towards employees attending year-end functions as well as gift and flowers for staff on special occasions.
