Rethink sponsors bursaries as part of its BEE strategy

Johannesburg, 03 Aug 2005

The sponsoring of study bursaries is part of Rethink`s skills development policy. In this regard, Rethink has recently awarded two study bursaries to Nosipho Shange and Suzan Tshikane for their tertiary studies. This follows the successful graduation last year of Salome Chaane with a BComm from Vista University. Chaane was Rethink`s first bursary student.

Shange is a 24-year-old female who, due to her historically-based financial restrictions, was unable to continue her education beyond Grade 12. She works as an office cleaner for a Johannesburg corporate cleaning company. Rethink`s bursary has now enabled Shange to embark on a long-time dream of one day completing a tertiary qualification so that she may move on to a bigger and brighter future. She has therefore elected to study towards a three-year National Diploma in Human Resource Development at Technikon South Africa under the auspices of Unisa. She says she would one day like to be a manager in a big company or in government where she can make a difference in the lives of the employees in the organisation.

Tshikane is from the rural village of Bethanie in Brits where she attended Lerothodi High School. Having started studying `An Introduction to the Theory of Law` through Unisa, she was aiming to progress to first year of a law degree but due to her family`s financial situation did not have access to the necessary funds. At this point it was brought to Rethink`s attention who undertook to assist Tshikane in achieving her goal. Tshikane grew up in a difficult and sometimes hostile family environment where she came to understand that the rights of individual family members and in particular children are very important to her. For this reason she has chosen to study `Family Law` and `Law of Obligations` where she feels that her strong interpersonal skills will be utilised and developed and her ideals will be achieved.

"One of our bursary success stories is the completion of a BComm degree by Salome Chaane, who majored in Business Management and Economics," commented Kem Tissiman, MD of Rethink Management Consulting. "When Salome`s mother passed away in 2001, she found herself in the unexpected situation of not being able to continue with her studies. Rethink then undertook to assist her via a bursary, which Rethink provided for three years.

"Salome is a dedicated and hard working person," continued Tissiman. "She has a positive attitude towards the working environment and envisions herself as one of SA`s future successful business women.

"Rethink recognises that the provision of bursaries alone may not be adequate to ensure the successful achievement of the candidate`s aspirations," concluded Tissiman. "To this end therefore, Rethink has undertaken to apply its own resources where possible to assist its candidates with the studying process, the completion or reviewing of assignments, exam technique or even the provision of extra classes."
