The Huawei Consumer Business Group reported increase in revenue and smartphone shipments for the first six months of 2017, boosted by sales of its mid to premium devices in key markets, including SA.

Huawei, which claims 9.8% of the global smartphone market as per IDC estimates, announced its sales revenue for the 2017 half-year increased by 36.2% year on year, while smartphone shipments rose to just over 73 million during the same period.

According to the company, this growth was driven by a significant increase in sales of mid-range and high-end smartphones in key geographies.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, says: "Our Consumer Business Group continued to deliver extraordinary growth, beating the industry average and penetrating high-end markets around the globe.

"This ongoing growth is testament to the strength of the Huawei brand and the momentum we've built through delivering premium, market-redefining devices that resonate with today's discerning consumers."

Local factor

In April, Huawei said it saw 87% growth in its premium smartphone series in SA.

As a result, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has its sights on being in the top two smartphone brands sold in the country - something Huawei SA's Consumer Business Group GM Likun Zhao believes the company can achieve in the next two years.

Speaking to ITWeb last month, Zhao said SA is a very good market to accomplish its target and the company will continue to focus on sales of mid to high-end in the country.

In the 2017 half-year financial results announcement, Huawei says it has grown its market share in the mid to high-end smartphone market in SA.

The company says it will continue to focus on its premium flagship line with increased sales and shipments in the P and Mate series.

"Following European trends, our growth has largely been in the P and M series in the $600 price band. We will continue to innovate at the high end and capture premium users," says Zhao.

"The first months of sales of the P10 and P10 Plus have quadrupled as compared to the P9. South Africa remains within the top performing countries in Huawei global sales," he concludes.
