Kingston's DataTraveler Elite 3.0 boasts 64GB of storage and has USB 3.0 capacity. This makes it a great companion to business workers who need to transfer large volumes of digital content.
The Kingston DataTraveler is also a great alternative to an external hard drive for consumers who like to travel with large media files.
Of course, priced at R1 027, the DataTraveler is more expensive than an external hard drive when compared in terms of storage per rand. However, the DataTraveler has two advantages over a hard drive, namely speed and size.
The DataTraveler can store about 80 standard-definition movie files, or eight high-quality HD movie files.
Look and feel
The Kingston drive has a fairly simple design, featuring a plastic cover with black and granite finishes.
In summary
Good: Great speeds, generous storage
Bad: Pricey, boring design
Rating: 8/10
Price: R1 027 (R522; R216)
Storage: 64GB (32GB; 16GB)
The DataTraveler has a retractable cover that slides back to expose the USB connection. It's a nice feature to cover the actual connection and a great alternative to a cap (which inevitably gets lost). There is an eyehole on the rear-end of the drive, so users can attach the drive to a lanyard, or a bunch of keys.
Unfortunately, overall, the DataTraveler's design is rather boring - the device is really nothing special to look at, despite its great functionality. The plastic finishes give the drive a cheap look that I would not expect on a flash drive with its level of performance - and at its steep price.
Performance
The DataTraveler achieved a write speed average of 30Mbps and a read speed of 56Mbps. It also achieved a burst read speed (maximum) of around 61Mbps. The drive held the burst speed for a few seconds, and then dropped to 50Mbps.
These speeds were achieved while using the drive with a CalDigit USB 3.0 express card adapter.
The Kingston drive is formatted to FAT32, which means users will not be able to save files bigger than 4GB. However, the drive can be reformatted to NTFS, which is capable of handling much larger files than FAT32. Users will have to reformat the drive before they are able to save high-quality HD movies.
In a nutshell
The Kingston DataTraveler is a great device for business and personal use. The 64GB model is quite pricey, but it delivers great speed with generous storage capacity. The DataTraveler is also available in 16GB and 32GB configurations.
The DataTraveler is perfect for mobile workers who need to store and move large files around, as its USB 3.0 capability allows it to read and write data at fantastic speeds.
