Review: Nokia C6

Johannesburg, 05 Jul 2011

The Nokia C6 is a great looking touch-screen phone that glides open to allow use of its qwerty keyboard.

It is smooth to the touch, so it feels great in your hands and, because it is weighty, it is easier to find in the bag than most phones.

The Nokia C6 allows users to customise their home page with six different widgets. This means users can tailor their home page to their individual needs. I found this great. Just by looking at my home page, I could see if I had new e-mails or Facebook updates. I could also access my most used applications from the home page and make calls to my top contacts at the touch of a button.

While the phone has a variety of themes users can choose from, users can also download themes and backgrounds of their choice.

The 3.2-inch HD display ensures that whatever you choose, the phone is great to look at. Even with six widgets, all the icons and updates are clearly legible.

Usability

Nokia has ensured a simple process for setting up the Nokia C6. Upon activation, the user is guided through each application. This allows for step-by-step integration of the preinstalled applications, such as e-mail and Facebook.

Although the phone is touch-screen, the qwerty keyboard makes typing messages and navigating between applications a pleasure.

I found the Symbian OS very user-friendly, but double-clicking in order to open applications was somewhat tiresome.

The C6 is 3G-enabled and can also connect to the via a connection.

The phone comes pre-installed with Ovi, which allows users to download games, videos and music tracks. Ovi Maps is great for navigation and can also pull up a number of restaurants and places of interest in the user's immediate vicinity.

Bloomberg is also preinstalled on the phone, which means users can also stay up-to-date with news around the world. The Bloomberg application can also be linked to the home page, so that users can be alerted when new stories are loaded on the Web site.

Other great preinstalled Internet applications include: CCN video, FaceBook, e-mail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo and Windows Live); and YouTube.

Multimedia

While the camera is only 5MP, the camera took great photos. The camera can also be set to save the date of each picture taken, which is great for anyone wanting to keep track of photos taken on occasions.

The video camera takes videos of up to 90 minutes in 16:9 film format. The phone also supports Flash video.

The music player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA files and the earphones provide good quality sound.

Wrapping up

I would recommend the Nokia C6 to professionals who like to stay connected, but also want to make use of great multimedia features like the music player and the 5MP camera. While the phone is cheap, users choosing to keep Internet applications open will find the costs rather pricey.
