Specialist removable storage solutions provider and local distributor of Rimage CD duplication products, Intelligent Systems (IS), has announced the first colour CD printer not to require specially treated CD media.
The Perfect Image Prism printer uses thermal transfer technology and produces images by depositing tiny amounts (300dpi) of wax-based ink on the CD surface. Benefits of using this type of pigment, according to IS MD, Chris Roux, are that the process requires virtually no drying time with indelible results.
"Images created by the Perfect Image Prism printer cannot be smudged by a moist finger - as is the case with water-based ink technology. The thermal transfer print comes out already dry and does not degrade over time, nor does it degrade the recorded media."
Roux says the product is designed to offer the highest quality on-demand printing on CD-R. The patented thermal transfer print process has been optimised for laser quality print results on CD-R media. The process is also compatible with printing on pre-silk screened media when such media is properly prepared.
"The Perfect Image Printer has been designed to suit the stringent requirements of production environments and is capable of consistent operation 24 hours a day, 7 days per week."
The local Rimage distributor points out that the thermal transfer solution is superior to more conventional ink jet solutions because the latter are typically made from low cost desktop print mechanisms.
"Such printers are usually designed for casual use, for the lowest possible purchase cost, but are not designed for demanding, sustained production applications," adds Roux.
