EMC Corporation announced today that Rockwell Collins, a global leader in aviation electronics and communications, has purchased EMC`s Symmetrix DMX and CLARiiON CX networked storage and the full suite of EMC open management software, including the latest version of EMC ControlCenter, to achieve more scalable service levels and further drive down costs.
The purchase is one of the next steps in Rockwell Collins` consolidation of nearly 40 storage systems from various vendors onto EMC networked storage systems and open management software to gain increased control over critical data, produce significant cost savings, and increase employee productivity.
Cost control plays a large role in a company`s competitive advantage and profitability. Rockwell Collins` ongoing infrastructure consolidation is strategic to controlling costs by allowing for more efficient and reliable management of massive amounts of information.
The existing EMC infrastructure already has reduced storage management costs by 45% and is expected to provide a 44 percent return on investment (ROI) over three years.
The performance advantage of the new Symmetrix DMX and the CLARiiON CX storage systems and improved manageability of the new ControlCenter software will allow Rockwell Collins to extend the storage consolidation and cost savings even further. The result is quicker, more efficient storage allocation, improved system performance and reliability, and reduced data centre space requirements.
EMC ControlCenter is key to more efficient management of storage and improved IT productivity at Rockwell Collins. With EMC ControlCenter, storage administrators at Rockwell Collins find it easier and less time consuming to report, manage and monitor the storage infrastructure. When one of its applications is close to running out of storage capacity, EMC ControlCenter makes it easy to add more. Storage administrators are freed up to focus on strategic storage management challenges, while redeployed administrators work on other important projects.
Rockwell Collins` existing EMC storage area network (SAN) provides centralised information access to HP SuperDome servers running Rockwell Collins` SAP R/3 Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. SAP drives the company`s business operations, including manufacturing, human resources, data warehousing and finance, which will all reside on the new Symmetrix DMX because of its increased performance, availability and scalability. CLARiiON CX will provide storage to SAP development, testing and other bolt-on applications. EMC Global Services, which assisted Rockwell Collins with the original ERP consolidation and SAN design and implementation, will continue to provide SAN and software-related services.
The new Symmetrix DMX and CLARiiON CX systems will allow Rockwell Collins to drive more scalable service levels across the storage infrastructure. The company will take advantage of the systems` improved performance, availability, and affordability, while benefiting from the fact that these systems are completely woven into a family of hardware and software that works together with common management and common components.
The company will implement EMC ControlCenter, including EMC StorageScope, to gain even greater management control over its Symmetrix and CLARiiON SANs.
