RRsat develops 3D TV channel

Israel-based content management specialist, RRsat Global Communications Network, partnered with HighTV to develop the first international 3D entertainment TV channel, reports TV Technology.

RRsat Global Communications Network will provide uplink services for the 3D feeds to the Eurobird-9A satellite to Europe and over the MEASAT-3a satellite across Asia-Pacific. Both channels will be distributed in MPEG-4 compression and DVB-S2 broadcast standard, says Broadcasting and Cable.

According to PR Newswire, Koby Zontag, senior director of sales and business development at RRsat, says: "We have already established RRsat's capabilities with live 3D interactive broadcast over fibre between continents and a major European 10-day sporting event broadcast in 3D over satellite.

“Working alongside HighTV, we intend to demonstrate that 3D TV is a valuable format in the genres of entertainment and lifestyles as well."

Telecom Paper states that the TV channel will be broadcast using RRsat's Playout Centre using digital workflow and including the archival storage of over 4TB of HighTV's 3D material.
