RSA, Sony partner for security on PlayStation 2

Johannesburg, 07 Jun 2001

RSA Security and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) have announced an alliance to enable secure Internet communication and data storage on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) computer entertainment system.

SCEI will incorporate RSA BSAFE SSL-C encryption software in the PS2 to enable users to conduct secure Internet entertainment, browsing and transactions, and will incorporate RSA BSAFE Crypto-C encryption software to enable privacy of data stored on the PS2`s hard disk drive unit.

RSA also announced that it has joined the SCEI`s Tools and Middleware Licensed programme. As part of this programme, RSA will offer security middleware for the development of software applications for PS2, enabling developers to create secure, Internet-based gaming, content and commerce applications.

The company intends to make other RSA BSAFE solutions available for P2 title developers, including RSA BSAFE Cert-C encryption software, a PKI enabling tool and RSA BSAFE IPSec-C encryption software, an IPSec security protocol tool.

"The demand for network-based content and services is growing rapidly as broadband becomes mainstream," said Peter Burgess, territory manager: sub-Saharan Africa at RSA Security. "RSA Security is committed to supporting content software development for PS2 with effective, standards-based security capabilities and the technical support to back them up."

The RSA BSAFE line of security software is embedded in today`s most successful Internet applications, including Web browsers, wireless devices, e-commerce servers, e-mail systems and virtual private network products. Built to provide implementations of standards such as SSL, SMIME, WTLS, IPSec and PKCS, RSA BSAFE products can save developers time and risk in their development schedules.

"As the worlds of entertainment and the Internet merge, RSA Security will work with SCEI to help enable a whole new generation of applications and content," added Burgess. "PS2 users will now be protected by the same RSA BSAFE encryption software embedded in today`s most successful Internet applications, including Web browsers, wireless devices, commerce servers, mail systems and virtual private network products."
