Short-term insurer SA Eagle has implemented a system developed by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) allowing brokers to handle all stages of an insurance transaction online, from obtaining a quote to printing out documentation.
The insurer says the system, which is touted as an industry first in SA, means that real-time changes can be made to clients' policies and documents are printed out immediately, at the broker's location.
"Previously some insurers have provided facilities whereby brokers obtained rates or e-mailed enquiries via the Internet, but then had to fax back the completed forms and wait for documents," it adds.
CSC has a multimillion-rand contract to handle software development, IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing for this arm of SA Eagle.
CSC developed the system by building a fully functional Internet front-end on its I/90 mid-range insurance administration solution, based on an IBM AS/400 platform. A pilot system was tested in September last year and at least 150 brokers are now using the system.
"If you understand insurance and can use the Internet, that's all you need," says Graham Mash, CSC customer services manager, financial services solutions.
"A broker armed with a PC, modem and printer can now obtain a quote, convert it to a policy and print the schedule in one quick operation." Soon the broker will be able to manage endorsements, register claims and process renewals via the Web as well.
The system is fully functional for the full suite of personal product lines.
"This system prevents duplication of effort and confirms our commitment to helping brokers conduct business more easily," says SA Eagle GM (IT) Mark Neille. "This is the first phase in SA Eagle's e-business initiative. We are committed to using technology innovatively and are building solutions that achieve results quickly today and also create a strong foundation for the future."
CSC's functions at SA Eagle include managing the infrastructure that supports the brokers - supplying and maintaining the hardware - and operating a helpdesk that is the first level of support for brokers using the online system.
"Feedback has been very positive in this regard," Neille says.
