The youngest member of the South African mobile gaming team - and the only female team member - has won a gold medal in the World Cyber Games.

Fifteen-year-old Tamaryn Brooke-Smith from Paarl in the Western Cape defeated competitors in the Chopper Rescue game to win a gold medal and $2 000 in prize money.

She was one of the first South African teams to be sent to the world mobile gaming competition, which was run as a standalone event at the World Cyber Games in Singapore last week.

The other team members were Werner De Lange, playing in the Goolie competition; Ethen Reuben, playing in Mid-Town Madness; and Christo Janse van Vuuren, playing the Bruce Lee game. They were sponsored by Exactmobile and First National .

Started as the World Cyber Challenge in 2000, the World Cyber Games was first officially held in 2001. It has grown to be the world`s largest computer and video games festival, having more than 800 gamers from over 70 countries for the 2005 final in Singapore.
