The weekend-long South African national finals of the World Cyber Games came to a close last night with 11 local gamers winning the opportunity to compete in the finals of the competition to be held in Korea next year.

Tournament director and Gamers League of South Africa (GLSA) executive Warren Steven described the tournament, which attracted more than 500 of the country`s most dedicated gamers to The Dome at Northgate, as "highly successful".

Beside the chance of winning a trip to the finals, the top two players for each game also won around R3 000 each with the top Counterstrike team pocketing R16 000. The national Cyber Games finals were sponsored by Samsung, the official worldwide sponsor of the event.

Entrants competed at four different games - Quake 3, Age of Kings, Starcraft and Counterstrike - for the chance to earn a berth in the finals in Korea. The finals of the Cyber Games competition carries a total prize of $300 000 split over the nine game types.

Steven says SA will send the finalist and runner-up of each of the Quake 3, Starcraft and Age of King games to the Korean final, as well as a five-person South African Counterstrike team. He adds that the GLSA will sponsor the Counterstrike team as well as the individual winners. There will also be a second Counterstrike team sent to the finals, but Steven says these team members will be required to sponsor themselves.

The top Counterstrike team was xTcA consisting of Chris De Swardt (nicknamed BloodYBladE), Garth Jones (Brute), Armand Van Schalkwyk (Shape), Kevin Murphy (Stryfe) and Shaun Marx (Deathsbane). Runners-up in the Counterstrike competition were GI Ownage and NDC Xtreme.

Top honours for Quake 3 Arena, a first-person shooter game, was taken by Stephen Cloete (Ph4ntom), followed by James Cloete (Shadowlord). Starcraft Broodwar was won by Marius Van Greunen (Kaalgat), followed by Pierre Le Riche (Slayne) and Chris Barter (Swoop). Age of Kings, a period-style strategy game, was won by Tobie van der Spuy (Glow) followed in second place by Robert Jacquier (Baron).
