Local cellular operator Vodacom and hardware giant Dell have partnered to bring a laptop with an embedded 3G high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) data card to the South African market.
The Dell Latitude D620 notebook with built-in HSDPA card - linked to Vodacom`s network - is now available, says the cell operator in a statement.
Shameel Joosub, MD of Vodacom SA, says "the solution is compact and easy to use," adding: "Pairing the [embedded] card with the extended battery life of the notebook means Vodacom`s customers have the freedom to work anytime, anywhere."
"The laptop is designed for users who seek performance, mobility and convenience - it is a truly multi-functional computer that does away with the inconvenience of separate external devices," says Dell SA`s MD, Stewart van Graan.
A 1GB cap package will cost consumers R850 per month (R250 for the laptop and R600 for the data cap). A 500MB cap package will be R600 monthly (R250 for the laptop and R350 for the data cap). Both packages are available only on 36-month contracts.
Vodacom`s move to work closely with an IT multinational follows its major competitor MTN`s recent announcement it would align itself with another IT giant, this time on the software side, though a partnership with Microsoft.
