Smyth replaces Hano Coetzee, who resigned with effect from the end of January to “pursue personal interests”.

Smyth has a BCom and a postgraduate accounting diploma from the University of Natal, and is also a CA (SA). He is currently GM of operations at SAA, a position he has held since May 2007. During the 2009/10 financial year, he was acting CEO for the national carrier.

In addition, he was “an integral” part of the team that restructured and turned SAA around from an R880 million net loss for the year ended March 2007 into a R580 million profit during the 2009/10 financial year, says Pinnacle.

The listed distributor says Smyth has “extensive financial experience in Africa, having served as group FD of Kenya Airways from 2001 to 2005, and then as CFO Virgin Nigeria Airways, from its start-up in 2005 until he left to join SAA in 2007. Prior to his African experience, Smyth was finance executive at Radiospoor Telecoms.”

Pinnacle will report its half-year results on 16 March.
