In a bid to improve the management of its e-mail environment, South African Airways (SAA) has finalised the revision of its data storage hardware, which deals with an average five million to six million e-mails a month.
The storage hardware solution was supplied by Shoden Data Systems through SITA INC, a provider of network-integrated IT solutions and services to the travel and transportation industry, says SITA INC manager Lizelle de Jager.
She explains that the new storage solution was installed in April last year, and its implementation has now been finalised, following extensive testing.
The Shoden Data Systems solution was mainly selected for its scalability for future increases in data storage requirements. According to De Jager, SAA's e-mail volumes, at its headquarters at Johannesburg International Airport, are rising by 10% a year.
SITA INC sales director Linda Ngcaba says the data storage box that was installed, the HDS Thunder 9500, has 2TB of data stored on it. However, with future e-mail archiving requirements, as well as the need to take snapshots of the data, SAA needed a solution that would handle this data increase.
"The fact that the Thunder 9500 can be upgraded to hold 60TB of data provides a significant protection of investment, and SAA were satisfied with this strategy," he adds.
"The IT administrators are now able to manage disparate systems from a single console, thus reducing complexity of the IT environment," comments SAA acting CIO Mike Re, adding that the installation will simplify the management of the entire Microsoft Exchange environment.
