SAA gets ready for take-off with ICL-supplied Sun Starfire

Johannesburg, 30 Mar 1999

In line with recently announced moves by South African Airways (SAA) to reduce operating costs, the national carrier is to install an ICL South Africa-supplied Sun StarFire Server to run all SAP allications and act as a disaster recover node for SAA`s new yield management system.

The product, also known as the Sun Enterprise 10000, is Sun Microsystems` most powerful available server.

According to SAA`s capacity planning manager, Henry van Vledder, the StarFire offers multi-domain capability that will enable the airline to address three of its key focus areas in an increasingly competitive environment - the reduction of future costs, the reduction of systems management complexity, and the need for a system that lends itself to future scalability.

The StarFire server was installed at SAA earlier this year by systems engineers from ICL SA`s Sun Competency Centre, who will continue to provide the airline with ongoing support.

Client director at ICL SA, Mike Semple, notes that the company has been an authorised Sun Reseller and service partner since 1993 and currently supports more than 60 customers with Sun systems throughout South Africa.

"Sun Microsystems is an important component of ICL SA`s total solutions offering and, in order to focus the Sun business, we`ve recently established a Sun Competency Centre at our Rivonia head office.

"In addition to supporting a team of Sun-trained system engineers, the centre also provides sales support, second level product support, technical consultancy and a call centre providing advice and guidance to all Sun users," adds Semple.
